In 2019, amidst global and national calls for environmental sustainability, Powergas recognized an urgent opportunity to address one of Nigeria’s most pressing environmental challenges: gas flaring. Partnering with A.P. Moller Capital, an investment firm with a strong reputation for infrastructure investments, the two companies formed a joint venture named Powergas Ebedei Limited (PEL) to execute a “Flare Gas Monetization” Project in Delta State (Nigeria). This strategic partnership was born out of a shared vision to leverage the existing infrastructure and brand strength of Powergas to significantly reduce gas flaring in Nigeria, starting with one of the flare sites in the Niger Delta region.
The Nigerian government had been pushing for gas flare reduction, a move that aligned with global policies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Recognizing the potential of the gas flaring sites as a source of sustainable energy, PEL was conceptualized to transform these sites into commercially viable ventures. The chosen site for this pioneering project is located in Ebedei (Delta State), within the Niger Delta, a region infamous for its high levels of gas flaring due to the concentration of oil and gas extraction activities.
